In the gardens east of Piazza San Marco (Giardini della Biennale Internazionale d'Arte) these pine trees are planted in tidy rows and columns. Noticed this trend while on the train north of Florence too: small (1-2 acre) woodlots, looked like a poplar, assume for a pulp product because the form was pretty poor. Nice to see these trees after a day of narrow Venice streets!
