Two photos for the click of one. The one on the left shows fellow stagiare, Chris, pretending to eat a plucked chicken. After viewing the defeathered birds, we all said, So that is why a fake rubber chicken looks as it does! The second photo shows Brian, a volunteer who worked with us during stage, putting knife to neck. Before the murder, our cross cultural facilitator, a voodoo practitioner, told us to give the chicken a drink of water. This is a very common ritual in Benin. Notice the giant bowl of dead chickens in the background. I did not write about this experience in my travelpod. To give you a quick rundown, our stage had a cooking day during which we learned how to create traditional Beninese cuisine, including Pate Rouge, peanut sauce, and more. I was part of the peanut sauce crew. No chicken killing for me!
