The Spruce Tree House is the third largest cliff dwelling within Mesa Verde. It was constructed between A.D. 1200 and A.D. 1276 by the Anasazi. This dwelling contains about 114 rooms and eight kivas, or ceremonial chambers, built into a natural cave measuring 216 feet wide and 89 feet deep. It was thought to be the home for about 100 people. Due to the protection of the overhang cliff, the Spruce Tree House had deteriorated very little through the years. As a result, Spruce Tree House is approximately 95% original. Since there was a large Douglas spruce growing from the front of the dwelling to the mesa top, the cliff dwelling was named Spruce Tree House.
