We had crossed the border from Venezuela by land, a slightly eventful crossing, and we were happy to leave the miserable Venezuelans behind! Cartagena is another of these Colonial towns. A very picturesque town, built by the Spanish as a port for shipping Colombian gold to Spain. Pirates cottoned on to this, so the Spanish fortified the town extensively.
