Toyoishi Shrine is one of the two important shrines of Taketoyo. The other is Takeo Shrine. Nagoa and Oashi Villages merged and became Taketoyo Village in 1878. The name traces back to their guardian shrines: "take" from Takeo shrine and "toyo" from Toyoishi shrine. In 1891, the village became Taketoyo Town. Taketoyo merged with Fuki Village in 1954 and became present Taketoyo Town.
