Papyrus- was the first paper plant (Cyperus Papyrus) and used to grow abundantly in Egypt, particularly in the marshy Delta. In antiquity Egyptians put papyrus to a number of uses i.e.- they wove it into a suitable medium on which to write- this method was largely responsible for the explosion of literacy in ancient Egypt. It was one of the symbols of upper Egypt and wasn't rediscovered until the 20th century, by which time papyrus had vanished from most of the country. Recently, there has been some replanting. You can tell if you are buying the original by holding it up to the light and seeing if it has crosshatching on it- if it does it will be made from the original plant. I bought a papyrus Egyptian paining from the museum we visited- of which you can buy big or little ones with numerous well known Egyptian scenes and hieroglyphics etc painted on it- all of which the guides will explain its meaning. As most of the paintings centred around the worship of Gods etc- l decided to get one depicting a musical and dancing scene- appropriate l think for me- especially since one of the musicians is playing the harp on it!
