Giving away uniform buttons and pins isn't just something from manga. I first heard about it in NANA when Nobu brags about selling off his buttons to the girls who had a crush on him. There was no selling, and both the girls and boys collected the buttons and pins. However, I saw a couple 2-nen sei shyly approach a popular boy for the remaining buttons. :D
