Forgotten World Highway SH43 From Tongariro Park to Egmont Park, 156 kms of memorable driving, a drive back in time according to the the travel guide descriptions to how New Zealand used to be. Little has changed except now it is quieter as the early pioneers such as miners, railroad construction workers have disappeared with only original village settlements and a few farmers remaining. One such community is Whangamomaona Village with only 30 residents and a pub, which declared itself a republic in 1989 and celebrates Republic Day on January 22nd every year with an influx of a bout 5,000 people to help them celebrate, shame we shall miss this, it sounds like a great street party. Time frozen landscapes of deeply ridged hills and sub-tropical rainforests dropping down from the narrow winding roads, that go over several saddles, through a gorge, a narrow tunnel and over the Wanganui River and several streams make up an incredible journey. It's weird and wonderful.
This is a top pick!
