The Fox Glacier or Te Moeka o Tuawe (its Maori name) is located in Westland National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It was named in 1872 after a visit by the then Prime Minister of New Zealand, Sir William Fox. It's massive. How massive? Can you see me in this photo? Signs posted says don't venture onto the glacier without proper equipment or guides. I could quite possibly be one of those idiots you see on Faces of Death. Fortunately, Darwin was on my side this time and I made it out safely. We only had time to traverse one of the two glaciers and since fate had us hiking Franz Joseph, I wanted to be sure I at least touched Fox. The example I set for these two Chinese boys eagerly watching me, was surely appreciated by their mother who was holding them back in aghast.
