Essaouira is known for its surfing, wind surfing, and kite surfing due to the heavy winds in the area. Another interesting fact is that the Dutch helped build wind turbines in the area that produces 19% of the city's electricity. Along with its beach/surf culture, Essaouira is also known as the "Moroccan Woodstock" - they were setting up for the famous music festival that is soon to take place. Apparently, even Jimi Hendrix frequented the area.
