We were given a great tour of this imposing old monastary, by a very eloquent guide. The Monks could shut the windows to make their cells totally dark while the flagellated and found peace. You can see one of the old olive trees - the oldest on the continent. The Spanish ordered all the female trees killed so that they could take control of olive production - but they didn't realise that the trees would take so long to regrow (I think at least 50 to bear fruit )- so it was a bit of a flop for them.

Those olive trees were so eloquent - hundreds of years old. Unfortunately the monastery wasn't open when we were there.
