Galloping Gurdy

Galloping Gurdy, Seattle, United States

An older bridge that once stood here was called Galloping gurdy b/c back in the 1940's the strong gusts of wind would make her sway horribly. So much so that people had to abandon their cars for their own safety. That bridge was torn down years ago by mother nature and replaced with the one pictured.

NOT!
:D
you're not in seattle you're in tacoma, looking at gig harbor. the bridge in this picure is the E narrows finishes in '08. the one next to it (the rickity old one) was built not too long after the original fell in '40. the w bridge (4 lanes) used to be 2 lanes going each way (no devider) and to this day sways terrably in the wind! so much that they still close it when the wind gets over 25mph or so.
if you were on the gig harbor side of the water here you'd see piles of rusty steal cables and huge blocks of cement left from the old bridge.
Ive lived here my whole life. :) beautiful place, fun to watch the second bridge construction.
