Raffles is across the street from the King's Palace, and also stayed high and dry. Raffles is one of the best hotels in town. It is known for being built like a fortress. In 1974 ex-patriots stayed here during the inital days of the military takeover by Pol Pot, until they could be evacuated safely to another country. The Ex-Pats knew they would be safe behind Raffle's extremely sturdy walls. It's also built on elevated ground so it was very safe in the storm, too. Inside Raffles is beyond luxurious, with old-style colonial grace and elegance. Staff wear silk and turbans, there is hand-carved teak furniture in abundance, rubbed daily with oil to maintain it's fine patina. The air inside smells of fresh ginger. Lunch here will set you back $50 easy (most meals in Siem Reap are under $3.50 U.S. dollars). A hotel room is around $550 in low season. (Very expensive in Cambodia!)
