Sandvík has a viking history. Sigmundur Brestisson, a viking chief, was swimming from the island Skúvoy to Sandvík, where he was killed by Torgrímur Illi (Torgrimur the Mean). There is a monument raised in Sandvík over Sigmund Brestisson, the monument is made by Hans Pauli Olsen. Sandvík is the northernmost village in the island Suđuroy in the Faroes. The population is around 100.
