Laocoon was a high priest in Troy who warned his fellow citizens to be aware of Greeks bearing gifts (ie. Trojan horse). Those gods who wanted Troy to fall sent huge snakes to crush Laocoon and his two sons. The statue captures their terror and struggle. Having been lost for centuries, it was found shortly before Michelangelo began working on the Sistine Chapel. We know that he studied this statue and was influenced by it.
