I think this is the finest carving of the Renaissance. Michelangelo completed it when he was only 24 and it was the only work he signed. It is a very moving piece -- the polished soft folds of Mary's robe, the drooping lifeless limbs of Jesus, the knowing look of loss on Mary's face.
