Dome of the Rock rests on top of the old Jewish Temple Mount... believed to be built long ago over the stone alter where Abraham was going to sacrifice his son for proof of his love for God... being stopped of course before the act could take place... it is also the holy site for Moslems, who believe it to be the site where Mohammed ascended to Heaven...
