The Northland has the largest remaining Kauri tree forest, called the Waipoua Forest, established in 1952 after much public pressure. It's the largest remnant of the once-extensive kauri forests. This tree is 51 meters tall and is called "Tane Mahuta" -- lord of the forest. He's estimated to be about 1800 years old.
