Day 258. 8:35am A stitched panorama of Petra from the place of high sacrifice, an area that easily offers the best vistas of the site. The nearest thing Petra has/had to a down town can be seen to the bottom right of the picture. It is here, connected to Al Khazneh by another narrow gorge, that the city opens out onto the valley shown in the picture. The road here was once the centre of the busy & affluent trading city but today it is lined with the ruins of the old city structures (temples, theatres, an amphitheatre etc). The site is enclosed on three sides by rose-coloured mountain walls giving Petra the advantages of a fortress while allowing the Nabatean's to grow rich off being able to control the main commercial routes of the region. Petra has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1985 & was recently named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Petra, Jordan. April 27th 2008
