Day 3 - Lismore, Co. Waterford The thing I like about driving around Ireland is that you're never too far from something to see. Take this for example. On our way back towards Dublin from Cork we stop by the side of the road to admire this, Lismore Castle. This place was once owned by Sir Walter Raleigh, then by Richard Boyle, the 1st Earl of Cork, and by his descendants up to another Richard Boyle, 4th Earl of Cork & 3rd Earl of Burlington. One of these descendants was Robert Boyle, the Father of Modern Chemistry, who was born in Lismore Castle in 1627. Lismore Castle is still owned by the English Duke of Devonshire, who only uses it for short periods of the year (Chatsworth House is the main family seat and the home of the Dowager Duchess). For most of the year the castle is available for rent by groups of up to twenty-three visitors. Lismore, County Waterford, Ireland. March 31st 2006
