As you will see in later postings Siberia is known for its wooden buildings and Irkutsk itself has its fair share of photo worthy wooden buildings, most in need of a serious overhaul. This is a photo that captures well the sunken condition of a wooden home on Ul Chkalova in one of the older parts of the city, not far from our hostel. The street itself was a picture postcard scene lined with wooden buildings, mature, but bare, trees and covered in mostly virgin snow. A far cry from the industrial looking downtown of Irkutsk and most, if not all, Russian cities. Unfortunately none of the pictures I took of the street did the scene I've just explained justice so this picture will have to do. Sorry. Ul Chkalova, Irkutsk, Siberia, Russian Federation. This is a top pick!
