Sitting on the edge of the Ebrie Lagoon, Adijan is the economic capital of Cote D'Ivoire. It was the former administrative (official) capital of the country before this 'honour' was bestowed upon Yamoussoukro in 1983. It is one of the few cities in West Africa to have skyscrapers, and is refered to as 'the Paris of Africa' because of its vast gardens, landscaped boulavades, centres of learning and cultural attractions. However, since the Ivoirian Civil War (which began in 2002), Abidjan has become the secondmost dangerous city in Africa.
