The Graycliff had its heyday in the 1930's when the rich and famous stayed here. Of great (political) interest was the Duke of Windsor (former King Edward VIII) and his wife, Wallis (Simpson), and the time they spent in the Bahamas. They enjoyed the Graycliff a great deal. The Duke (known as David when he wasn't the king) and Wallis appeared to be Nazi sympathizers, even having met with Hitler in Germany, and in public. Hitler looked forward having David as an ally in Britain. However, David & Wallis were sent to the Bahamas where he was made Governor of the Bahamas for the duration of WWII. The Brits wanted to keep him out of Hitler's reach, but David allegedly believed that it was only a matter of time until Hitler won the war and put him back 'in charge' over England, not necessarily as king, either.
