Upriver's Great Adventure
About this blog
The undertaking of this journey is to realise a dream I've sustained for almost 20 years.
Back in 1992 when I was living in Buenos Aires, I heard about two English blokes who'd travelled by canoe...or maybe kayak...from the mouth of the Orinoco River in Venezuela all the way to Buenos Aires by river.
To do this they'd paddled through the river basins of the Orinoco, Amazon and Paraguay Rivers. I wondered how this could be possible as surely river systems or basins are separated by a range of hills or mountains.
Well the systems do join and finding out exactly where was the biggest part of my research. I had originally had the somewhat irrational idea of doing this trip by jetski. Fortunately common sense prevailed and instead I've chosen the local method - by whatever boat or rivercraft are available.
First it's some general tourism for about 3 months so that Angela, my newly wed, can discover a few of the places that I first saw so many years ago, plus some new places that will be new for me as well eg Angel Falls.
So South America, let's see how you shape up in 2011.
