About this blog

First, a little of Corsica and then onwards to the island of Sardinia for a long time, our fabulous family holiday was in these islands of the Mediterranean, experiencing the lovely beaches, mountains and visits to the ancient nuraghis (the round towers built by early peoples). Sardinia is such an excitingly ancient location, human remains having been found on the island dating back to 250,000 BC. Desiccated grapes, found in several locations, were tested and proved to be the oldest grapes in the world, dating back to 1200 BC. The Cannonau wine made with these grapes, the mother of all the European wines, I did get to drink and it was good. Sardinia is one of the candidates for the legendary Atlantis. Plato gives a geographic description of the island of Atlantis as "For the most part it was lofty and precipitous except for a level plain immediately around the capital city. This plain was oblong shaped and faced southward. The plain in turn was surrounded by mountains." Sardinia is nine tenths mountainous with the Campidano Plain being oblong shaped and opening to the south to the Gulf of Cagliari. Plato talks of fountains both cold and hot around which the Atlantians constructed buildings that were used in winter as warm baths. Sardinia has hot and cold springs all over the island. In addition there are a number of archaeological findings of "sacred wells" built in ancient times around water sources. Plato said that Atlantis had many tame and wild animals on the island including many elephants. Sardinia in ancient times was inhabited by various species of wild life including dwarf elephants. Another matter Plato discusses is the bull cult that many Atlantians followed. Archaeological remains on Sardinia include rock cut tombs in the northwest part of the island that are decorated with carved bulls' heads in relief. Plato describes the three primary colours used to decorate the buildings on Atlantis. They were white, black and red. The round towers belonging to the Nuraghi culture have been excavated and found to be painted in red and black stripes.
