Singapore (4 days)
About this blog
It's a nice enough city, very modern and a huge financial center, but it's not very exciting or all that much fun. Everything is clean and organized, but wow, it's extremely expensive and just doesn't seem worth it.
The story of Singapore is interesting, as a long-time multicultural melting pot of races and religions, but the most significant even seems to be the fall of then-colonial Singapore to the Japanese in WW2, one of the most dramatic events in the British Empire and the first great loss of territory to the enemy, followed by years of tough Japanese occupation.
Allied prisoners of war were not so lucky, and many were transferred from here to Sandakan in Borneo, and they all died during or soon after the "death march" toward Kota Kinabalu (see my short Sandakan entry here: http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/stevelegassick/71/1272751517/tpod.html)
