The Trek to Machu Picchu and Adventure!

About this blog

Since 2002 my Dad and I have had the marvelous good fortune to travel to six European countries, go whitewater rafting in Alaska and drive the length of Route 66 from Chicago to L.A. (Santa Monica, to be exact). Now we've just completed an adventure unlike anything we've EVER done: A visit to Peru and Machu Picchu.

We left Chicago for Peru on April 30th by way of Miami, then to Lima and finally to the city of Cusco, altitude 11,000 feet. After that, we set out on foot for a six-day trek through the Andes Mountains to reach Machu Picchu.

Travel just might be in the genes. The people on my Dad's side of the family wandered through Central and Eastern Europe, landed in the U.S. in the mid-19th Century and re-located frequently throughout the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic states. Relatives on both sides of our family lived across the country when I was growing up. In order to visit them, we had to travel. That made for some terrific trips. It also helped forge a continuing curiosity about--and a desire to see-- places large and small, close by and very far away. I'm not sure if that desire is inherited, but I like to think so.

We posted entries on this blog every chance we had. But because of our remote location and an accident, we weren't able to post as much information as we had hoped. That's why we'll be updating these entries with pictures, photos and expanded stories. Also, check out my own Website: www.dschwan.com as well as our other postings on Travelpod.com.

Now that we're home from Peru, we can really think about what happened. Let's put it this way: We wanted adventure...we got it!
