On 22 October 1927 my grandmother, Annie Maitland, set off to travel across India. At the end of her 21,500 miles round-trip, she wrote that she hoped to repeat the dose some day. In fact, she was to return just a few years later, to marry Rögnvald Livingstone, who she met on her travels. The diary she kept of her first visit to India has fascinated me for as long as I can remember. So here I am 'repeating the dose' and retracing, step by step, the journey she made more than eighty years ago.
