It really was a mad dash, and we had to miss out Milford Sound (probably my biggest regret), but we decided we wanted to see the south island as well, having booked the flights with the ointention of seeing just the north.

I'm really glad no one listened to my objections, because to be honest, the best scenery is in the south. As the car hire guy put it, "most people give the north island 10 out of 10, but the south island 20 out of 10".

We hired a car in Auckland, headed up to the Bay of Islands (Keri Keri), and from there down to Christchurch, taking the ferry across. Took in wales in Kaikoura, glaciers at Franz Josef/Fox, before flying back to Auckland.
