Diving Grand Cayman
About this blog
This is my first trip to the Caymans, mainly because of their homophobic history. But that's all been straightened out now and our local group's, (Lambda Divers') destination is Sunset House. I am pleased to see that they have a Hurricane Protection Policy, which states, "Sunset House will give travelers 18 months to complete their travel stay if the Cayman Islands Government declares a Hurricane Watch within the time frame of their immediate trip." I have never heard of such a thing and it stands out among Caribbean dive providers I believe. This is important to me because I have not gone to hurricane territory before Thanksgiving since I had an unfortunate experience in September on Emerald Island, the Outer Banks, one year early in my career. All I could do is watch either the beach wash away or rodeo shows on TV, not a fun way to spend a week's vacation. In the islands, it can be worse. Hurricanes Ophelia and Philippe turned north before reaching the Caribbean this year, and their swells were hardly noticeable. This image shows the eponymous sunset above Sunset House's salt water pool. In the background are the dive boats and a Disneyesque pirate boat which saluted us with cannon fire one night.
