Beijing 1998

Expo Comm China

One of the more exciting trips I undertook was the trip in 1998 to Beijing China.  This was a different world all together.  View the slide show to see some of the images.  Unfortunately the digital era for pictures was not that much advanced.  At the time I had a Sony Mavica MVC-FD7, several backup batteries, and a ton of disks (remember those?).

It took lots of the disks during our outings to capture the scenery.  Of course there was so much to see and you wanted to capture it all.  Swapping disks every five seconds, battery on the fringe, low image resolution, no auto adjust for exposures.  Beat the traditional SRL though, at least for the purpose of cataloging a trip.  Today I carry with me a pocket size camera with a long battery life and lots of storage.  I found the Insignia 10 mega pixels for $64 at Best Buy.  It is a great little camera for snap shots.  It is a little bit better in handling taking pictures than the iPhone.  Times changed, the purpose is still the same - making memories.

Back to the trip.  It was a very long flight, first to San Francisco, then to Tokyo, and another eight hours to Beijing.  I think the travel time was around 30 hours, most of it in the air.  I had arranged for one of the employees from the local office to pick me up and stay with me for the first days, including a car since China drives on the left side of the road.  I don't do left side road driving, compared to my friend Jacque who figures that if you can drive in Paris during rush hour you can drive everywhere. My "guide" helped me a great deal to get around, showing me sites (including the Great Wall), getting a kick out of me trying the local food.
