Paula & Angela's Alaska Adventure

About this blog

My sister, Angela, and I are heading to Alaska! The parents (Linda & Paul) are spending the summer RV'ing in Canada and Alaska, so we are meeting up with them in Fairbanks.

We'll spend Sunday taking the bus into Denali National Park. Hoping to see some wildlife and get a great view of Mt. McKinley, aka Denali (Athabaskan for "The High One"). On a clear day, you can see forever. On a cloudy day, you can't see the mountain.

Then we plan to head down to Talkeetna on Monday, and take a flightseeing tour where they fly toward the mountain and land on a glacier.

On Tuesday, it's a four hour scenic float trip on the Chulitna River.

On Wednesday, we'll move on to Anchorage, and do some sightseeing around the area, including a visit to the Alaska Native Heritage Center.

On Thursday, it's a Knik Glacier Tour - a 3 ½ hour tour on glass enclosed airboat.

On our last day in Alaska, we'll ride Turnagain Arm. We are hoping to have enough time to go to Portage Lake and take the Portage Glacier Cruise. You can never see too many glaciers. I'm hoping to take thousands of pictures (seriously - I bought a new telephoto lens just for the occasion), see lots of nature and wildlife (but no grizzly confrontations), and survive a week in extreme conditions (and by that I mean spending the week with family). Come to think of it, I probably should have seen my doctor about some medication to help me cope.

Jade's coming along, too. I'm a bit worried about some bird of prey mistaking her for a giant rodent, but I'll keep a wary eye and keep her leashed just in case. We'll both be glad to escape the heat and humidity of Boston. Yes, she's a chihuahua, but she gets very spunky when it's cool.
