Middle East Adventure Sept/Oct, 2010

About this blog

I am travelling to the Middle East to see Egypt, Israel and Turkey, countries that I have thus far not been able to visit. I have travelled since I was in my 20's but have now developed severe arthritis in my knees, along with nerve damage. Rather than stop travelling I acquired a Pride Go Go Elite Traveler scooter and take it everywhere with me from San Francisco to Alaska and across Europe and South America. I can walk 50 ft and stand for 20 minutes and use forearm crutches to go a bit further. I can get off the scooter and move it over a bump or two which makes it possible for me to go places that might be a little tricky for someone permanently in a wheelchair or even a power chair. I know of people who feel getting a scooter is "giving up" but I think sitting at home is "giving up". Until the knees (or the bank account) give out, I hope to be able to visit even more countries and learn more about the many different cultures on this globe of ours. Travel teaches tolerance and respect for others and keeps one from believe that there is only one way to do things. At least it does that for me. If anyone wants to know more about how to travel with a Scooter, email me and I will provide whatever information I can. I will be using drivers and guides who are experienced at making sure one gets as close as possible to the the sites each country has to offer. These countries often do not have sidewalks or if they do there are no curb cuts to ensure you can cross the street. The ancients sites may not be level and are often stoney or sandy, with stairs, hills and other obstacles. Egypt and Israel have both tried to eliminate some of the barriers and the guides I will be using specialize in touring with Mature, slow walkers or handicapped individuals. In Turkey on the other hand it may be challenging for the guides to get my scooter over many rough patches so that I can see things like Ephesus. This blog will provide information on what I can see and how easy it is to travel this way as well as pictures of the sites and some of the crazy things that may happen. As I said if anyone wants to know more about how to travel with a Scooter, email me and I will provide whatever information I can.
