Spearfish Falls: They Turned the Water Back On After 86 Years
About this blog
In 1917, the Homestake Gold Mine diverted the water in Little Spearfish Creek to a hydroelectric dam to support their mining operations. As a result, Spearfish Falls - once the largest in the Black Hills - was reduced to little more than a trickle. When the mine shut down and restored water flow in November 2003, people were thrilled. I finally made a trip to see them the following summer. It was well-worth it.
