No White in Sight - A Place for the few of us that DONT want to go to the "Top Destinations"
About this blog
Welcome to no White in Sight. Where we take you to destinations to get away from the lemming tourist traps. There will be no information about 'Top Tourist Destinations' like France, Thailand, Costa Rica, or Australia. Sorry. I know its a hard cause those places are super cool, but there's actually another 192 countries to choose from. This planet is absolutely massive, and there's no need to just follow everyones 'recommendations' or Leonardo from 'The Beach' to your favourite place.
Now your probably thinking "what's this douchbag going on about? Thailand is amazing, I drank 4 buckets, passed out on the beach, and had sex with a hot Thai girl, and she only needed $20 for bus money to get home the next day!' And you know what? Thats totally cool! Been there done that...well not THAT. But my point is, some people like to do different things. But for gods sake, understand that your not really experiencing that country your in. In these 'top destinations', its kind of like your going to to Disneyland. You will sleep in neighborhoods that have been completely changed around for the western flavor. All the 'local' people that you meet have been speaking english and catering to your kind all their life. The food that you eat is over priced, and changed to your foreign taste buds. And the people that are 'so nice' to you? Well, they just want your money! Ask them what they do. They own a shop, or want to book you on a tour, or sell you drugs. (I know, he was your best buddy) Oh ya, and the rest of the amazing people you meet 'from all over the world' are actually amazing! But this world is a brutal place, and your only interacting with the richest 10% of the people who can actually afford to travel. (only a handful of countries fit into that category) The remaining 90% will remain unheard as you speak to all your travel companions. Over the combined 6 years or so that I've been travelling around the globe, everyone seems to have their minds made up, and just go to the same places, over and over again. No time to do anything unplanned.
OK, I dont think I'm super cool anymore, whats the fucking point out of all this? This blog is about doing it different. I want to give insight into the benefits of bringing tourism to places where there is very little.
Just to cut right to the chase, here are the pros of leaving Disneyland.
-People tend to be more authentic: They are ACTUALLY interested in knowing about you. Your not just another person from Britain with lots of money to spend. From experience, this means your will be invited to community gatherings like festivals or weddings, just for being there. The further off the beaten path you go, the more generous they can be.
-Its cheaper: prices aren't jacked up for tourists, so you can eat with the local people, and pay the actual going rate for good food. Accommodation prices go with demand, if there's little tourism in that village, they wont charge you up the nose for a roach infested hole in the wall.
-WAY less hassles: You're less likely to get followed down the street to buy a useless tourist nicknack. The people that make a living hustling money out of tourists wont be there to bother you, because there's no tourists there to make a living from. This means scams become almost obsolete.
-You experience that actual country your in: You will experience what the locals experience, no over priced, over organized crap that they have made up for the foreign tourist.
