The long road to Aberdeen

About this blog

For those of you that we haven't talked to in detail about our planned adventure, here is four odd months in a nutshell. The plan is to make a start in Darwin and check out Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks. From there we will head to Seminyak in Bali and the Gilli Air (off Lombok) to do our open water scuba diving course and chill out before hitting Thailand.

We are going to start off in the south of Thailand, visiting Krabi, Ao Nang, Ko Samui and Ko Tao before making our way north west to Kanchanaburi. Next we will make our way north to Sukothai and follow the Burmese border through Mae Sot, Mae Sariang, Mae Hong Son and Pai. Then its across to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai and into Laos via Chiang Kong. We will follow the Mekong river south through Laos stopping in Pakbeng, Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng, and finish up in Vientiane before flying to Hanoi in Vietnam.

After checking out Halong Bay, we will follow the coast south through Danang, Hoi An and Nha Tran before heading across to Dalat and then to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). We are looking to then check out the Mekong Delta and enter Cambodia (via the chill out island of Phu Quok) and head from Sihanoukville through Kampot, Phnom Penh, Kratie and Siem Reap. From Siem Reap its back to Bali for some more chilling out in Seminyak and Ubud before returning to Perth to check out the west coast.

From Perth we have a couple of weeks to catch up with friends and family in Wollongong and Lismore, go to our close friends wedding and then hit the UK via Abu Dhabi. When we hit London, we have a pretty quick dash to catch up with friends and family, make our way to Aberdeen in Scotland, set up shop, remember what a job is and start work!

So why Aberdeen you ask? Well its simple.... work! I had never heard of Aberdeen before I started working for Matrikon and never really looked into the place before we started to consider living overseas. Matrikon has a large office in Aberdeen and I was amazed when I read up on the city and its surroundings (just google it!)... there is so much to see and do in the immediate surrounds, not to mention the easy access to the rest of Europe. Couple that with the type of work that I would be able to do in a place like Aberdeen and I was hooked. After making a few enquiries, talking to a few of the right people in Australia and Aberdeen and then expressing interest, I had a transfer arranged, a work visa approved and the house packed up.
