Serendipity. That's exactly what it was! I learned later that "Serendip" is an Arabic name for the island of Sri Lanka (Ceylon). I already knew the English defination of course; the gift of finding good things accidentally.

Shortly after moving to Woodbury, Minnesota, I "accidentally" met Carmen Matthews, a wonderful woman who has a passion for international travel. Since I had spent a year in the Philippines during the Viet Nam War and Carmen lived several years in Indonesia and Singapore our Asia experience became a fast link in our friendship. In one of our first coffee meetings, I remarked that I would like to see Bali and Lombok; she asked if I had ever thought about Sri Lanka. Sorry to admit, but, I had to think for a moment to geographically locate Sri Lanka and replied that I had thought of India but didn't know anything about Sri Lanka. The seed was planted. A trip to Sri Lanka took root. Serendip exists!
