About this blog

Duration: 1 week in mid-February Top 3 keywords describing this trip: History, Beach, Relaxation

San Juan Marriott Resort (booked through Cheap Caribbean) It was nice for what you'd expect from this hotel chain...clean simple room decor, but honestly nothing about our stay here really stuck out. We liked having easy access to the beach, and having a room up high where we could people watch from our balcony. However, we'd chose a different place to stay at next time...

El Morro (El Castillo San Felipe del Morro) was probably the highlight of our trip. Fantastic views and wonderful to explore. We took some of our best photos here.

Food: There were a few places that were good within walking distance from our hotel...but we wanted to try the more "local" food, not Subway. A local pointed us to Bebo's cafe. Go to Barrachina for their pina colada and what we like to call "mafungus" (it's really called mofongo). Mmm..that was tasty. We also found a surprisingly good Japanaese place and also ate gelato somewhere else...but can't recall the names... Old town seemed to have the best options as far as food goes. La Bombonera?- be careful what you order...we went around dinnertime...and it looked like we were served TV dinners on a plate. Should've tried their mallorcas...but hey, we didn't know.

Shopping: Old town in San Juan is great for shopping...found quite a few interesting knick-knackeries there. We thought it was hilarious that most of the touristy items were actually made somewhere else, like China...

So here's what we wanted to do but didn't get to for one reason or another: 1. El Yunque <-- will definately go here next time 2. Kayaking at night in the bio-luminescent bay <-- our must do activity for the next trip

What we learned: 1. Research food options before going. Yea, you can look it up on your phone, but it's a LOT easier having a list in hand than rummaging through screen after screen on your phone. 2. Research transportation options. Need a car rental? If you're going around a holiday don't count on being able to get a car if you hadn't booked ahead of time. 3. If there's something you really want to do...book it book it book it now. Or if you find out about it that first day you're there, book it then and don't wait until like, the day before you want to go do it. Yes, this might seem obvious to some people, but for others that seem to learn things the hard way- take our advice and BOOK IT already.
