About this blog

This blog is an account of my Americorps service in Alaska. As an Americorps volunteer, I am performing services for a non-profit called SAGA. Our mission is to improve lives, lands, and communities throughout Alaska. My position title is Team Leader and I will be working with another leader who is designated as the Field Educator. Together, we will be responsible for supervising six Alaskan-Native, young adults as we work and live together completing conservation projects in a service-learning environment. My crew will be developing job skills and involved in educational activities in order to achieve their personal goals by the end of the season.

During our stay in Alaska, we are living out of our two-person tents. We have some access to facilities for a shower once or twice a week, but most of our time is spent in a canvas wall-tent. This type of living is called "spike living". While on spike, we cook and eat in our wall-tent. The tent includes a two burner stove, a large metal bear-box for storing food and toiletries, a table with benches, a heater, a lantern, and a cooking kit.

The first ten weeks were designated for Team Leader training. Some of the training we have received includes spike living, wilderness first responder, leadership, leave no trace, trail maintenance, tool use and maintenance, OSHA, wild edibles, and bear and other animal safety training.

In the second ten weeks, we will receive our crews and begin our service projects. The projects I will be involved with include trail maintenance, DOT, and invasive plant removal. My crew will be performing these services in Juneau, Sitka, Prince of Wales Island, Petersburg, and Admiralty Island.
