About this blog

Blame it on the bad economy. We probably wouldn't be taking this trip if it weren't for Nancy's job at the Seattle Red Cross being eliminated, along with several others. She had enjoyed her work and her co-workers, and she was sad to have to leave. But as that door closed, we decided to open another. We have not been able to travel together for extended periods for several years, so we decided to take advantage of our new opportunity. As our first stop, we planned to spend Christmas and New Years with our daughter, Kirsten, who lives with her husband, Andy, in Cambridge, England. She is a library assistant at the Trinity College Library. We also made plans to stay with long-time friends, Bill and Marina, in Keighley, Yorkshire and visit Andy's parents, Brian and Aileen near Leeds. Nancy and I wanted to go to Southeast Asia to explore that region further, but we wanted a stop along the way to break up what otherwise would be a very long leg of travel. Nancy picked Sri Lanka as that stop. We had never been there, and it sounded fascinating, so that became our second stop. Then we booked flights from Sri Lanka to Bangkok and Bangkok to Seattle. In all, our flights combined cost about $2,000 each. Did I mention that Nancy is the travel guru? So, off we go on an around-the-world retirement trip.
