1987 - Greece & Egypt
About this blog
When I was about 8 years old my auntie and uncle returned from a holiday in Europe bringing me a gift from the British Museum - a glossy colour poster of Tutankhamun's death mask. This remained sticky taped to my bedroom wall until I left home for university ten years later, and triggered a fascination for ancient history which I have retained until this day. It seemed only natural when I took my first overseas trip that Egypt and Greece would be on the initinerary. I had a friend working for an international courier company and he wangled me discount air tickets in exchange for carrying a satchel of documents to London, but even then I had to take out a bank loan to fund it. It took me five years to pay it off, but I've never regretted it . Before I left I picked up a 4" X 2" trip diary from a newsagent which I carried with me everywhere, jotting down thoughts and impressions about the places I visited and the people I met. Tragically the photographs from that magical experience have disappeard, lost in one of my many subsequent moves, however l somehow I managed to hang on to that little journal .
