Mission trip to Banica, Dominican Republic (Bordered with Haiti) in June 2005.
About this blog
When I was a rising Junior at Paul VI Catholic High School, I went on a mission trip to Banica, Dominican Republic for 2 weeks. Banica is about a 5 hour drive from Santo Domingo and is right on the border of Haiti. Literally, Haiti was just a 5 minute walk away from the river where the local people transported their goods. We did various things like built fences, church pews, played with the local children, and collapsed of heat exhaustion. There was no air conditioning, running water, etc...However, there were plenty of Trantulas and Mosquittos.
Overall, I had a pretty terrible time because I ended up being sick for most of the trip, but I loved the local children and the music in the church ceremonies would give you goosebumps if you heard it. We primarily worked with just two local villages--and then after our 2 weeks, we got to spend 2 days at a nice resort in San Juan before our departure.
