About this blog

In the summer of 1970 three students of civil engineering at Brighton Polytechnic, Bob, Ray, and John, joined BUNAC, the British Universities North America Club, an organization operating a student exchange programme between the USA and Britain: it allows students from each country to visit the other country and work there to support their respective visits.

Ray had an invitation, which included for friends, to stay with a family in Culver City, part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. So the trip was planned, the J1 visas obtained, and the flights were booked.

It was to be an unforgettable experience, a chance to see the USA, its people and their way of life, their view of the world, and to their country with its huge variations in culture, climate, and geography.

This account has been written 41 years later. It is based on diary entrees made at the time and on recollections of the events, places, people, and experiences. Some of the diary entrees are difficult to decipher, either because the writing is not pristine or because the information was noted somewhat cryptically. However, the following is a reasonable representation of how Bob, Ray, and John spent their time in July, August, and September, 1970.

The pictures included in this blog are digital scans of photographs taken at the time. The photographs have in the intervening years been stored in less than ideal conditions (including a few years in a shed in a London garden), which accounts for some loss of quality. Those taken on Kodachrome have survived reasonably well while those on Fujifilm have lost both definition and colour.
