Jordan 2006
About this blog
This October Lubos and I decided to take a break from all of the stress of work and plumbers. In thinking about where we wanted to go, there were two things on our list: something exotic - and it had to be in the sun.
It was almost twenty years ago, in July 1989 that I went to the Middle East for the first time. One of my stops was the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The highlight was the Nabatean city of Petra. When I was there last, Harrison Ford had just completed filming "The Temple of Doom," so it was difficult to learn anything about the Nabateans; I did, however, learn a lot of Harrison Ford trivia. Twenty years later, the site has been excavated even more than back then; the road we walked on was three meters under the sand in 1988.
In addition to Petra, we also wanted to treat ourselves to some R & R at the Dead Sea and the Red Sea. We spoiled ourselves rotten in very nice hotels, and we enjoyed looking at one of the world's finest collections of mosaics.
Sadly, many people thought we were crazy to go to the Middle East. Our trip reaffirmed that the Arab people are kind and generous, and they are able to separate US foreign policy and the American people. I feel that if Westerners continue to travel to the region, this understanding will deepen - EnShallah.
