Heading into the Peruvian Amazon

Hi, Guys: I just sold everything I own and quit my job, and am heading south to the Peruvian Amazon to see how much trouble I can get myself into, and how quickly I can accomplish that goal. I have a hazy goal of connecting with an environmental group working to protect the Amazon rainforest from Big Oil, Big Lumber, Big Beef, Big Gold, and the various other assorted Big Bad Planet Eaters out there. I've already joined South American Explorers Club, and I'm looking around for a good volunteer position. Any recommendations (or "anti-recommendations") for me would be greatly appreciated.
