When we began talking seriously about taking a family vacation, my goal for this trip was to relax. in. the. sun. That's it. It had been 51/2 years since I last laid on a beautiful warm beach - 2005, Phuket Thailand - and I wanted to do it again.

All inclusives have their appeal, but after lots of consideration we decided on something different. Something that could accommodate my need for beach and pool time as well as Gino's need for...well, more.

What we came up with is a pretty decent trip to Miami and the Keys. We are planning to spend a day and night in Miami (eating Cuban sandwiches is mandatory), rent a car for a spectacular drive over the Florida Keys Scenic Highway, and rest for 4 or 5 days in Key West before driving back to Miami. Sounds pretty good. I think we've successfully planned the right mix of relaxation, play time and adventure to make this an unforgettable first family vacation. We start the adventure on Monday January 10th in Detroit, MI with dinner at Lafayette Coney Island....
