China's bustling economy may be expanding at an exponential rate, but its fertile farmlands have been deteriorating - and as such, internal migration has become an increasingly pertinent national issue. Many Han Chinese are venturing beyond their hometowns for work, increasing the population flow to China's most remote and most sparsely populated autonomous regions of the far west - Xinjiang and Tibet. Movement of Han Chinese towards this western frontier has been accompanied by increased government control and development projects under China's Western Development Strategy, all of which have fueled existing regional tensions. During this research trip, we will explore through interviews and observation the effects and results of the WDS.
