Fred.Ropp's Great Adventure - (Vernae In My Pocket)
About this blog
I wish to ride my Honda Goldwing from Mesa, Arizona to Melbourne, Florida to catch the May 15th Shuttle Launch. From there, who knows? :-) After the launch, I will be heading to North Carolina and visit friends and family. Not sure where I'll go from there. We'll see where I'm lead! It's nice NOT to have plans sometimes! My plan is to not have plans. My goal is to blog my travels to a gutsy little lady named Vernae. She is confined to a wheelchair; however, her brain and tenacity cause her to soar with the eagles. She is a believer and stands firm in her convictions. I hope to have her bravery some day. Before I left, I went to her home and obtained her permission to blog to her and call it "Vernae In My Pocket".
Actually morning of departure The morning is a bit chilly with an air of expectation. For the last several weeks, I had been busily involved with planning a cross-country motorcycle trip around our great USA. Plans are beginning to come together and inhibitions are starting to settle to a nervous faint. There's much to consider in packing a Honda Goldwing preparing for three months of riding. Strange how so much planning can eventually take up so little space! I'm anxious to hop on my bike fondly named "Goldie Honda" and ride my way to Florida. The bike weights 840 pounds dry and will take another 400 pounds including me. That will become approximately 1240 pounds total plus or minus a few Mars candy bars. You might say it becomes as heavy as a small car. My immediate goal in Florida is to witness the shuttle launch scheduled for May 15, 2010. I'd much rather take Goldie Hawn dancing, but have decided a dance with my "green dream machine" is just as good. (Well, almost) My ultimate mission is to share my trip with someone who can not experience a bike road trip. I recently visited with my friend Arlene. It was my privilege to meet Arlene's daughter Vernae. She has now become my main lady. :-) I first heard of this feisty little gal from her feisty little mother. Arlene is a member of a special club that helps celebrate the morning sunrise at Starbucks miracle working brewery. After some meaningful conversations that involved Arlene bragging about her daughter, I decided I MUST meet this girl! After my visit, I am pleased to report that Vernae was the picture of perseverance and strength. She confronts her battles daily with a determination that is limited only by her sheer will to conquer all she decides to undertake. I am privilege to share my trip with this lady. There will be times when I meet harsh, unforgiving weather. High winds and rain will greet me in many places, but I will feel blessed to share every moment of this trip. It is at this point that I will begin my story to her. It will be called "Vernae in my pocket". Vernae, I hope you enjoy our trip together! Your friend and fellow writer, FreDerick Ropp
You have inspired me to keep looking over the next mountain just to tell you what's on the other side!
