Western China 2010
About this blog
This was my second trip to China. Having seen many of the historical sights, including the terra cotta soldiers at Xian, my father and I wanted to focus on Western China and its natural beauty. We started with a few days in Yangshuo, near Guilin, in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Guangxi borders Viet Nam to the south. We spent too much time in Yangshuo and I would recommend spending no more than two days and three nights in this area. Avoid Guilin and head directly to Yangshuo.
We then spent almost two weeks in Yunnan Province, hiking, birding, and sightseeing. Most of the photos in this post are from Yunnan Province, which was much more interesting than Yangshuo. We saw impressive peaks, more than seventy bird species (May is not an ideal time for birding), and were exposed to interesting cultures, including the Bai, Naxi, Tibetan, and Yi cultures. We also spent time with the endangered Yunnan Golden Monkey and had dinner with the scientist responsible for their recovery.
I cannot wait to return to Yunnan. Next time, I will concentrate on Gaoligongshan, a major biodiversity hotspot, and the far north region of Yunnan known as Deqin.
There are no entries for this trip yet.
