Belém - Bethlehem by bicycle

About this blog

I just finished my PhD thesis and decided to make a long bike trip. I thought in several trips but when I went last year to Santiago de Compostela a great challenge appeared to my mind!

The idea of this trip is to make the distance between Belém (in Lisbon, Portugal) and Bethlehem (in Israel) by bike. I will follow the christian roads of Europe. First I will go to Fátima (religious place in Portugal) then to Santiago de Compostela. From Santiago, I will go to Lourdes by santiago route (french route) in the opposite direction. I will then cycle until the Vatican. Finally, from the Vatican I will go to Israel in a mix of cycling and boat trips.I will pass through Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus before reaching Israel.

The first goal of this trip is to challenging myself for doing such a long bike trip. The longer bike trip I ever made was in Netherland during 14 days. In this trip I won't find such flat surfaces than in Netherland. Furthermore, it will be 6 times longer. I don't know how I will feel by the end of it ;-) The second goal is to learn a little bit more about the history of Christianity by passing in the most important european places of this religion. The aim of this trip is not religious although so many days alone make us thinking of several issues sometimes connected to religion. The third goal (and maybe the more important) is to visit and enjoy the lovely places that I will pass by.

Finally, I will try to update this blog has often as I can.

PS: Although I am portuguese, I will write this blog in English since I have many friends that don't speak portuguese.
